Safety guide for elevator emergencies

2025-12-22

A. Three Warning Signs Requiring Immediate Caution

If you experience any of the following, be prepared to take emergency action:

1.  The elevator stops running unexpectedly between floors.

2.  The elevator's movement suddenly accelerates uncontrollably.

3.  The elevator operates with unusual noises, vibrations, or a burning smell.

B. Recommended Protective Actions During a Malfunction

If the elevator malfunctions (e.g., sudden stop, fall, or jerk), assume a protective posture to minimize injury:

1.  Press all floor buttons. This may trigger a safety system to stop the elevator at the next possible floor.

2.  Grip the handrail firmly (if available) to stabilize yourself.

3.  Keep your back and head straight and tight against the interior wall** to protect your spine.

4.  Bend your knees. This is crucial, as your leg muscles and ligaments can better absorb the impact force than locked joints or bones.

5.  Lift your heels to avoid ankle injury. If space allows, spread your stance or brace against the wall for added stability.

Most Important: Once safe, use the emergency call button or phone to contact help. Do not attempt to force the doors open or exit an elevator stuck between floors. Wait for professional rescue.
